Jordan Casteel Questions
1. Why do artists make portraits? What purposes do portraits serve, beyond offering visual representations of a person or group?
I think the purpose of artists' portrait painting is to tell the audience the story of that person. Therefore, I think it is thought that the portrait that can best introduce the model to the audience and convey emotions through the painting is a well-drawn portrait.
2. What makes a community?
A community is created when people around them feel bond or empathy while living in a similar way.
3. What are the “communities” that you interact with / belong to?
Korean, Korean Diaspora
WHILE / AFTER YOU WATCH THE VIDEO:
4. As you view the portraits featured in this video, what kinds of things strike you or resonate with you?
After watching this video, I thought it was cool for her to draw to convey other people's stories to the audience, and I really wanted to try it someday.
5. How would you describe Casteel’s community? List some words that may describe the communities that she engages with in the video(s).
Kind, warm, family-like.
6. In Casteel’s paintings, what do the bodies and gestures convey?
They are generally sitting and looking straight ahead to the audience. As if to show their story.
7. Describe and compare your reactions to Casteel’s portraits of nude models and to those of clothed models. How does each set of portraits tell different stories?
When I look at the dressed portrait, I automatically inferred the person's style of dressing, background and color. But in naked portraits, becasue they are not wearing anything and the background is indoors, I couldn't inferred about that person and I could more focus to read the story of that person from the painting. I think the purpose of it is showing themselves naturally without pretense.

History/Herstory/Theirstory Reflection
1. What is the title of your work?
Surviving from the New Yer's Meeting
2. What inspired your final project? Where did your ideas come from?
When I first started to think about my story, I immidietly recalll the memeory when I always had to not express my own opinion infornt of my uncles and cousins every new year family meeting. and I've always thought that me can't have my own opinion and having to choose the answeres that were given is kind of look like a game.
3. How does this piece connect to your own personal sotry, or to the story of your family, or to the story of your community or culture?
In estern asian culture, every new year we gather around as a big family and celebrate the new year. And for the new year's luck, adult memeber of the family give money to thier children and give an advice of life. When I was young, I didn't have to have any conversation, but as I grow up they started to care about all the things I do. And it was aufully stressful.
4. What are some of the "Images" used in your art work? How do you connec to these images?
I recall the memory when I played the simulation game as I young.
5. What materials did you choose to use to create your work? How do these materials relate to the ideas you are working on?
Game's background music and the ansqwer that you can only choose but can't write is kind of look like me who can't have my own opinion at the family meeting.
6. What do you hope your audience understands, when looking at your artwork? WHat is this piece about, for you?
I hope the audience will look at my work and think of a situation in which they were forced to hide their opinions and remain silent, And I hope my work comforts the audience that just because you were silenced, doesn't mean that you are week or coward.
7.Do you feel like your piece is successful? How do you know?
If you ever silenced you would understand the feeling that you want to say but can not and Even if you finally have the courage to break the silence, there is no difference and it just a game over. I think that a lot of people have experience. that at least once in their life so I think my piece is succesful.
8. What mark would you give yourself, out of 10 on CREATIVITY?
I think it is a creative idea to connect the despir of being silenced and the fixed bad ending if you don't choose the right answer. 9 out of 10
9. What mark would you give yourself, out of 10, on CRAFTSMANSHIP
I wanted to make game that you can actually play for this project but it would taked too much time so instead I did it as a video. But I'm sad that I could not show my idea perfectly as I first imagined. 6 out of 10
